How to Care for Your Clip in Hair Extensions
Are you thinking about getting hair extensions but aren’t sure if you want to commit to permanent ones? Why not try out clip in hair
extensions? Even clip in extensions have specific directions on how to care for them, so be sure to keep this in mind when deciding on yours.
Many people opt for clip in hair extensions over permanent hair extensions, as clip in hair extensions can last longer, and can be removed from
the hair as necessary. If you’re not looking for a permanent look, you should consider the versatility of clip ins. Even clip in hair extensions
need special care in keeping them in top condition.
All clip in hair extensions have varying care instructions according to the brand and style of extension you are purchasing. You’ll need to
refer to the manufacturer’s instructions specific to your particular extensions for directions on how to care for yours. For the purpose of
teaching what you could get yourself into for clip in extension hair care, we’ll cover some of the general information here.
Be sure to brush the hair extensions daily. If the hair needs it, you can use a good leave-in conditioner. Try not to use too much, as you
don’t want build-up on your hair to make the hair flat.
You will probably want to wash your clip in hair extensions at least once a week. If you exercise,
or go swimming or partake in any other activity that gets the hair dirty, you should wash them immediately. Clip in hair extensions will also
collect build up from hair products, and debris. This will cause it to tangle and such, so it is important to properly wash and care for it.
Before washing your clip-ins, be sure to detangle them. Gently detangle from ends to the clips with a pick or wide tooth comb. Combing not
gently will result in breakage or pulling out the hair. When shampooing, do so carefully with lukewarm water and a detangling shampoo. Gently
work the shampoo through the hair from the clips to the ends. Be sure not to twist or rub the hair as you wash it. Rinse out the hair completely.
Remember, there are hair extension kits avalaible if you need them!
Choose a conditioner for your clip ins. “Dry” hair conditioner works particularly well. Work the conditioner through and rinse. Gently squeeze
out extra water. Detangle your clip ins again with a wide tooth comb or pick. It is not recommended to brush your hair while it is wet.
You will probably find it best to allow your extensions to air dry, but you can also blow them dry on low. You’ll probably want to store your
hair extensions with your clips closed to avoid having them tangle.
If you must swim with your extensions in, wear a cap to limit exposure to salt or chlorine. Before swimming, you may want to consider putting
a few big braids in your hair before putting it in the cap.
Are you able to colour your clip in hair extensions? If the clip ins are synthetic, they are not able to be coloured. If you have human hair extensions which are made of real human hair, they can be colour treated, but with caution. The
clip ins are likely to have already been coloured, so you could damage them if you try to chemically process them again. Be sure to check with
the manufacturer for their recommendations.
Clip in hair extensions may seem like less work because they do not stay in one hundred percent of the time, but they still need proper care.
If you learn to care for your extensions well, you’ll find they will last you a very long time.
