Gifts For a Doomed Planet?

With the Kyoto Protocol to prevent climate change and global warming expiring in 2012, the upcoming Climate Conference in Copenhagen is even more essential for the worlds’ survival.  Without any apparent sense of irony, the event is being held at the Bella Centre conference venue, near Kastrup, Copenhagen’s airport, into which governmental representatives from 170 countries will arrive by jet plane!

What Christmas gifts would the hard pressed and misunderstood world leaders appreciate in these trying times?  What little trinket would remind them of the reason for jetting in to Copenhagen for a few days on the jolly?President Obama is said to be hobbled in his approach to Global Warming by the interests of big oil and energy back in the USA. Gifts for him that are useful and make a point could include the ever popular Global Warming Mug.Next time he wraps his hands around a comforting cup of coffee, he can see if he should buy a boat anytime soon.  When you add hot water to the mug, the world’s coastlines slowly disappear under a hundred metres of water to reveal the shape of things to come after the polar ice caps melt.It’s a kind of fun disaster mug, the sort of thing that should have been made to commemorate the efficient disaster management in New Orleans really.It proves that, even though Global Warming is hardly a hoot, we can still smile in the face of adversity.

OK, as stocking fillers go It’s hardly likely to get ‘em whooping and hollering and may only evoke an embarrassed “oh – how nice” response from the great and the good.Put it this way, the mug will last longer (and any agreement reached in Copenhagen probably considerably shorter) than the other seemingly appropriate gift of chocolate shot glasses. After dinner, if some world leaders want liqueurs and some want chocolate without resorting to those ghastly fake tasting liqueur chocolates, what better way to solve the dilemma than to make shot glasses out of exceptionally delicious chocolate?Just don’t look for the equally useful companion set of the chocolate teapot!
