Thin Neckties Return To Popularity With The Mad Men Show

Mad Men is not just a phenomona on the AMC channel, the stunning classic thin ties worn on the show are becoming a popular trend in modern fashion. The Mad Men television show takes place in the early 1960s when narrow ties were the most popular. Now men’s periodicals like GQ are promoting the style and even modern designers are examining the show for inspiration on classic ties. For anybody who wants to try this style, remember today’s thin neckties should have a contemporary look.

When to Wear Narrow Neckties:

Wearing Narrow or classic neckties allow the man to dress up or down depending on the event. The best thing is that everyone from young boys to executives are pulling off this look which gives them an instant cool edge.

For business professionals, a patterned, tailored suit or plaid shirt can be paired with a solid vintage men’s ties. Keep the look business like by choosing a tie that is a bit narrower than usual, creating the projection of self-assurance and power. Sometimes the vintage thin tie has a small but special design half way up the necktie which can bring a bit of interest to an otherwise ordinary business suit.

A skinny tie paired with a traditional black suit and white button down shirt is a timeless look that is perfect for a black tie affair. For a lighter style, a narrow tie can also be paired with a cotton shirt and a vest. To create a playful and comfortable style, push up the sleeves on a long sleeved shirt or go with short sleeves and add a striped or bold colored colored skinny necktie.

Though narrow neckties look fantastic, their small size means they are just not a great style for bigger men. Buff, muscular men will feel more pulled together with a normal width tie. Also, the narrow tie look is more appropiate younger men. To still get the look of the Mad Man television show, older men and more buff men can go with a necktie that is skinny, but a little wider than the 2 inch ties typically worn as narrow neckties.

Pure silk neckties in soft light blues, muted grays, browns and greens carry off the vintage style that reined during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Of course, narrow ties in plaid, featuring graphics, exciting reds, purples and oranges can also be worn. When going with a bright necktie remember that the more exciting the tie is, the more tuned down the suit should be, to keep from looking too busy.
